The Heritage League of Pierce County is committed to provide professional workshops and programs that benefit member organizations and individuals. Each year at least four workshops are scheduled. We encourage you to attend these informative sessions. Member organizations receive e-mail alerts for each upcoming workshop. Pre-registration is required for members and non-members. Seating is limited for most workshops.

Creating a Successful Volunteer Program:Volunteer Management Basics. COMPLETED
From volunteer management to what motivates volunteers, this workshop covered the who, what, when and why of volunteer management. The workshop will conclude with a question and answer period. Thank you to Kathleen Maki, Manager of Volunteer Programs, Seattle Art Museum, for presenting this informational workshop.

Exhibit Design on a Dime
This workshop was presented by exhibit designer Chris Fiala Erlich, M.F.A. Chris showed how a smart design can make inexpensive materials shine like gold. In the two hour workshop, Chris gave tips on basic design principles and affordable materials and methods. She showed how to apply the fundamental tools of unity and variety to your exhibit design, and how (and why) to create focal points and drama. She provided advice on choosing colors and fonts.

Out of the Cardboard Box: How the history museum in Gig Harbor improved its collection storage
The workshop was presented by Victoria Blackwell, Curator of Exhibits & Collections at Harbor History Museum. The workshop showed how the society evolved from early collection storage, handling, and processing to the system and process in use today. Victoria shared her processing plan developed for the move to the new storage location and offered tips learned through trial and error. Victoria also discussed how the society funds collection management. After the workshop, attendees were given a tour of the future museum.

Discovering the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Washington State’s first world’s fair, held in Seattle in 1909
Workshop provided tips and techniques that can be used for researching any topic of interest. Presented by Lorraine McConaghy, Public Historian, Museum of History & Industry

March 26: Job Carr Cabin Show & Tell
If you missed this workshop, you missed a wonderful show & tell of the Job Carr education program. The museum's traveling trunks offer Tacoma third graders an excellent hands-on learning experieince, from drawing portraits, to creating an evolving mural of Tacoma, to loading a covered wagon, to creating a puzzle timeline. Thank you to Mel Carr and Kathy Westlin for putting this workshop together.
