Ezra Meeker Historical Society 

General Statement of Position:   This is a part-time position (20 to 30 hours/week) which performs professional duties in the operation of the Ezra Meeker Historical Society.  Duties include supervision of staff, recruitment, training and coordination of volunteers; general administration of the society; evaluation and implementation of historical programs and activities.  Curatorial duties which include the preservation and restoration of the Meeker Mansion. These duties are accomplished primarily through the extensive use of volunteers. The pay will be determined depending on qualifications.

The Ezra Meeker Historical society is a 501 C (3) tax-exempt organization with the mission of restoring and operating the Meeker Mansion as a museum, preserving the history of the local area and its links to the Oregon Trail.

Supervision:  The Society is administered by a 10-member Board of Directors which meets monthly.  Daily decisions and general operation are the responsibility of the Administrator/Director. Policy decisions are the purview of the Board of Directors.

Specific Duties:

  Responsible for:

• ·          The efficient operation, maintenance, and restoration of the Meeker Mansion.
• ·         Recruitment, training and coordination of Docents and other volunteers;
• ·         Implementation and supervision of fundraising events;
• ·         Administration of the Historical Society, including Board of Director support, financial recordkeeping which includes construction and execution of the budget;
• ·         Fund raising and grant writing;
• ·         Long and short-term planning;
• ·         Educational programs which includes school liaison, publications and management of educational resources;
• ·         Mansion restoration which includes task identification artisan selection and supervision as well as volunteer work parties;
• ·         Representation of the Historical Society in the community, which includes public relations, participation in the Puyallup Main Street Association, the Chamber of Commerce, Valley Arts United, The Puyallup Heritage Committee and the Heritage League of Pierce County;
• ·         Assist the Board of Directors with its statutory responsibilities for operating in the public trust.

 Knowledge of:

• ·         Northwest history:
• ·         Principles and practices of managing a historical collection and programs;
• ·         Methods of designing and displaying historical collections;
• ·         Administration and promotion of historical and other museum programs.

Ability to:

• ·         Recruit, train, motivate and effectively supervise volunteers;
• ·         Communicate effectively both in writing and orally;
• ·         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers and others in the performance of duties;
• ·         Speak effectively to public groups about the mansion and its collections;
• ·         Operate a personal computer.

Preferred Qualifications:    Interest in history and any combination of education and experience in operating a museum.  The ability to organize, motivate and lead groups of volunteers to an objective.

Special Requirements:  Must be able to climb three flights of stairs, lift up to 25 pounds, and be able to assemble and dismantle displays.  Ability to travel in immediate vicinity of Pierce County.  The Meeker Mansion is a non-ADA structure.

Employment:  Probationary period will be six months with monthly reviews; formal reviews will be conducted at three and six months.
